TotalEnergies officially starts production of SAF in Antwerp today, in the presence of Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate and Environmental Transition Jean-Luc Crucke. SAF, or Sustainable Aviation Fuel, is a sustainable aviation fuel that contributes to the energy transition in the aviation sector.
SAF production at TotalEnergies in Antwerp
Sustainable aviation fuels are an alternative to fossil kerosene, they are produced from biomass and residues from the circular economy and are readily available solutions for reducing CO2 emissions. They can be used directly without modification to existing logistics infrastructure for storage and distribution, nor to the aircraft. TotalEnergies produces sustainable aviation fuels via two routes: in its bio-refineries and in its traditional refineries via co-processing. The TotalEnergies refinery in Antwerp will initially produce 50,000 tonnes/year of SAF via co-processing. The production capacity will then be increased to 80,000 tonnes/year.
