The global shipping industry represents roughly 3 per cent of global CO2 emissions and is one of the toughest sectors to decarbonise due to dependence on traditional bunker fuel made of heavy oils.
Spain is emerging as an international hub for marine solutions thanks to its access to strategic ports and optimal conditions to produce advanced second-generation biofuels and competitive green hydrogen to meet both the immediate and longer-term decarbonisation needs of the global shipping industry.
The International Maritime Association has set an ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport by 20-30 per cent by 2030 and 70-80 per cent by 2040 compared to 2008 levels, with a goal of achieving net-zero by 2050.
