The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has introduced a new pilot program to explore alternative methods to transport CO2, expanding beyond traditional pipeline networks. The initiative forms part of the UK’s broader strategy to scale carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) deployment across industrial sectors.
Announced on 9 April, the Non-Pipeline Transport (NPT) Pathfinder will assess the feasibility of moving captured CO2 via road, rail, and shipping. The scheme was initially outlined during the selection process for the East Coast Cluster in Teesside and is intended to complement existing infrastructure while increasing system flexibility.
Industry group Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) described the program as a key step toward enabling a more adaptable CCUS network.
