This evolution is supported by High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) technology, which allows for more efficient combustion by pre-injecting a small amount of fuel at high pressure to facilitate hydrogen ignition. In fact, as they are powered by hydrogen, the trucks will offer improvements in energy efficiency, power and consumption, as the company assures.
Volvo Trucks’ Head of Product Management, Jan Hjelmgren, said: “Road tests are an important milestone for our trucks with hydrogen combustion engines,” adding: “I am convinced that they will be the best in the industry, if we look at fuel efficiency, power, torque and handling. He also stressed that “customers will be able to operate the same as with diesel trucks” and that “our experience with HPDI technology in more than 10,000 gas trucks is a solid proof of their performance.”
